• Software Installation & Configuration Tips:
Envisio Video Extension (EVE) is installed by inserting the enclosed diskette and double clicking the Installer icon.
EVE has a configuration dialog box that is used to select the type of monitor you wish to drive. This dialog box is accessed by holding down the Option key when you boot your PowerBook. You must select a monitor type from this dialog box the first time you boot up.
Then you can access the Monitor control panel to "acknowledge" the monitor, select bit depth, set relative positioning of the two displays, and determine which screen you would like your menubar to appear on.
• A Warning about Installation of the NDA:
Apple's warranty requires that an Apple authorized technician perform the installation of this Envisio product. If the installation is performed by anyone other than an Apple authorized technician, Envisio will not accept any responsibility for damage to the NDA or your PowerBook.
Technical Tips from Envisio
The NDA030 is a video board and memory upgrade for the PowerBook that uses software to define how to drive many of the different displays on the market. Due to the vast array of applications and utilities available for the Mac, there are occasional conflicts between our software and other vendors’ software. There are also other settings which must be adhered to when using the NDA030. The following information includes known conflicts and recommended settings to provide optimum performance of our product.
Connector install tips:
Before pushing the connector through the opening at the hinge, it helps to remove two screws on the underside. The two screws, labeled ZH1 and ZH2, are located on the inverter board (the board on the underside of the top half the PowerBook).
Also when installing the new hinge cover, you must use a paper clip to hold the display ribbon cable against the hinge bar while putting the cover on. This prevents the ribbon cable from getting on the wrong side of the plastic tabs on the cover.
When assembling the top half to the bottom half of the PowerBook, make sure the Envisio cable is to the side of the Envisio board. (See picture on page 27 of the owners manual)
System 7.0.1 users: You MUST install System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1. If you do not have this diskette, contact your Apple dealer immediately. In addition to ensuring compatibility with EVE030 1.4.1, System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 fixes a problem in System 7.0.1 that may cause files to vanish inexplicably.
System 7.1 users: You must use EVE030 1.4 or later.
A note about Display Detection: Due to the nature of the Display Detection feature, it may or may not work properly for your particular monitor/CPU/memory configuration. If Display Detection proves unreliable for you, hold down the “option” key on startup and turn it off in the Envisio dialog box. You may leave the Envisio software configured for your monitor. To bypass the Envisio software when starting up without an external monitor, hold down the trackball button on startup.
Known fixable software conflicts (see end of document for solutions):
Asanté SCSI EtherNet Box
Connectix PowerBook Utilities (CPU) from Connectix (2.0 or later works fine, no conflict)
Extensions Manager from Apple (1.8 or later works fine, no conflict)
Now Utilities 4.0 or older (4.0.1 or later works fine, no conflict)
Known software incompatibilities:
A/ROSE from Apple’s System 7 software (not intended for use on PowerBooks)
Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh (SAM) from Symantec (application and control panel)
DiskLock from Fifth Generation Systems
Maelstrom, a common shareware game
Spectre from Velocity Software
Spectre Supreme from Velocity Software
If you find that you have a software incompatibility (A/ROSE, SAM, DiskLock, Maelstrom, Spectre, or Spectre Supreme), do the following:
1. Delete the incompatible software by moving it to the Trash and emptying the Trash.
2. Do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document).
3. Reinstall System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 (7.0.1 users only).
4. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1.
5. If it still fails call Envisio Technical Support at 612-628-6288.
Should you run into a problem in loading the EVE030 1.4.1 extension, try the following:
1. Reset the Parameter RAM (see below).
2. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1 (see below).
3. Rebuild the desktop (see below).
4. If the above steps fail to work, do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document) (Tune-Up 1.1.1 also for 7.0.1 users) and EVE030 1.4.1 and try again.
5. If it still fails call Envisio Technical Support at 612-628-6288.
To Reset the parameter RAM:
Do a restart and, after the initial startup chime, press and hold the “option”, “command”, “P” and “R” keys. You will hear the startup chimes again. Let the PowerBook chime 5 additional times and release the keys.
Installing or Reinstalling EVE030 1.4.1 :
Do a restart and after the initial startup chime press and hold the “shift” key to turn all extensions off. Insert and open the diskette, then double-click on the Install EVE icon.
To rebuild the desktop:
Do a restart and after the initial startup chime, press and hold the “shift” key to disable all extensions. After you see “Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions Off.”, let go of the “shift” key and press and hold the “option” and “command” keys. Next you will see the Desktop rebuild dialog box. You may release the keys at this time and click on the “OK” button. Restart your PowerBook after the rebuild process is complete.
For the best operation of your PowerBook, set your control panels as follows:
Memory control panel:
The Disk Cache should be set to at least 192K for optimum performance.
Portable control panel (Sys. 7.0.1 only.):
“Stay awake when plugged in” must be checked. Then put your cursor on the word “Minutes,” hold down the “option” key and click your trackball. This will bring up a hidden dialog box. Check the “Don't rest” button.
PowerBook control panel (Sys. 7.1 only.):
Set to “Maximum Performance.” Go into the “Options” and check “Stay awake when plugged in” and “Do not allow cycling.”
Operation of PowerBooks with an Envisio card using an external keyboard is not recommended. External desktop keyboards are high-power ADB devices and as such draw too much power from the internal components of the PowerBook. The lower voltage inside the PowerBook can damage the Envisio board. From page 218 of the PowerBook manual, “Make sure that any ADB devices you connect are designed for portable computers. Such devices are marked with the low-power icon shown (on page 218). Do not connect standard ADB devices such as keyboards for desktop Macintosh computers to your PowerBook computer, even if the power adapter is plugged in.” The only low-power keyboard available as of this writing is the Apple Extended Keyboard II from Apple Computer. No other keyboard should be used with any PowerBook.
Kensington TurboMouse users:
You must have the version 4.0 TurboMouse hardware. Hardware previous to version 4.0 is high-power, and as such is not designed for use with a PowerBook. Contact Kensington at 1-800-535-4242 to determine whether you have the version 4.0 TurboMouse.
The PowerBook should never be operated in the closed position. As with any Macintosh, the PowerBook needs to dissipate heat from the processor and disk drives. This is best facilitated by operating the machine with the feet in the down position and the screen of the PowerBook in an upright position. This will help eliminate the possibility of overheating.
As with any electronic item, you should never plug or unplug anything into or out of the PowerBook with the power turned on to either of the items, or while the PowerBook is in sleep mode.

To resolve the conflict With Asanté:
Reinstall software in the following order using the installation disks:
1. Do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document).
2. Reinstall System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 (7.0.1 users only).
3. Reinstall the Asanté EtherNet software.
4. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1.
To resolve the conflict with CPU 1.0:
The LCD Saver module of CPU 1.0 is incompatible with EVE030. If you have been using CPU 1.0 with the LCD Saver module active, do the following software reinstallations using the installation disks:
1. Delete CPU 1.0 from your Control Panels folder and the CPU Prefs folder from your
Preferences folder.
2. Do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document).
3. Reinstall System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 (7.0.1 users only).
4. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1.
5. Reinstall CPU 1.0. Before restarting your computer, open the CPU 1.0 control panel and turn the LCD Saver module off in all six sets.
If you have not yet installed CPU 1.0 you only need to follow step 5. CPU 2.0 does not conflict.
To resolve the conflict with Extensions Manager 1.6 or earlier:
1. Delete Extensions Manager from your Control Panels folder and EM Extension from
your Extensions folder.
2. Do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document).
3. Reinstall System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 (7.0.1 users only).
4. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1.
5. Upgrade to the Extensions Manager 1.8 or higher.
To resolve the conflict with Now Utilities 4.0 or earlier:
1. Delete all parts of Now Utilities.
2. Do a clean, fresh reinstallation of System 7 (see instructions at the end of this document).
3. Reinstall System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1 (7.0.1 users only).
4. Reinstall EVE030 1.4.1.
5. Upgrade to Now Utilities 4.0.1. Contact Now Software at 800-237-3611.
To do a clean reinstallation of the System to replace a damaged System and/or Finder:
1. Make an empty folder on your desktop and name it “Fonts & Sounds.”
2. Open your System suitcase inside your System Folder. Move everything except the following items into your new “Fonts & Sounds” folder. Do not move these things: Chicago, Courier, Geneva, Helvetica, Monaco, New York, Palatino, Symbol, Times, Droplet, Indigo, Quack, Sosumi, Wild Eep. (System 7.1 users should not see any fonts in their System file.)
3. Restart from the System 7 Disk Tools floppy disk, open your System Folder, move your System suitcase and your Finder file to the Trash and empty the Trash.
4. Restart from the System 7 Install 1 floppy disk. At the Easy Install dialog box, choose the Customize button. In the Custom Install dialog box, choose only the System software for your particular PowerBook. Ex: “System for Macintosh PowerBook 170.”
5. After the installation is complete, restart the PowerBook. Open your hard drive window so the System Folder icon is visible. Open your “Fonts & Sounds” folder. Move it if necessary by dragging the title bar so that you can see your System Folder icon behind it. Choose Select All in the Edit menu. You will notice that all the files in your “Fonts & Sounds” folder are highlighted. Click on one of the files and drag them on top of your System Folder icon. You will see a message from the PowerBook asking you if it should put them where they belong. Click the OK button, and Trash the empty “Fonts & Sounds” folder when the PowerBook is finished moving the fonts and sounds back into your System.
